In 2013, I decided to do something different. I enrolled at the University of Memphis as a part-time student to earn a second bachelor's degree in Journalism. I was still working a full-time job as a medical coder, but I was not happy. I was dealing with the same corporate America trauma - working as the only Black person in the department and feeling like I was not good enough.
I wanted to pursue an internship opportunity, so I made a decision to leave my full-time job. Years ago, I listened to a video by Steve Harvey and he said, "Sometimes you have to jump" and this was my moment to jump. I had two months of income in the bank, but I knew this was my only opportunity to do something different.
