Writing for social media platforms

Updated: Mar 22

by Paula Anderson

Social media has become one of the communication channels that we use to connect with friends, connect with colleagues, apply for jobs and share information and resources.

Creating content on social media should focus on four areas:

  • Awareness | Exposure

  • Sales Promotion

  • Product Launch

  • Website Launch

Before you begin the writing process, establish S.M.A.R.T. goals.

Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Realistic and Time-based.

Consider the social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram) and the generations. Choose the platform that reaches your ideal customer. Everyone is not on all platforms.

In this article, Pew Research Center shares some insights about the following generations below.

  • Baby Boomers

  • Generation X

  • Millennials

  • Generation Z

When you develop your goals, consider the following questions:

  • What value am I adding to my followers?

  • How often should I post content?

  • What is the call to action?

  • What is the communication message?
